86 Your Idea, I nc.

               Learning about Your Product's M aterial s

You probably have a good idea of what materials you'll need to cre
ate your product based on the list you made in the Biz Brainstorm:
Materials List for Your Product. Learn as much as you can about
those materials-the more familiar you are with your product, the
better you will be able to sell it.

                                Keep an Open Mind

Don't assume that you know the exact material you should
be using, even if you think your materials list is "final." Be open
minded as you do research just in case you find something better
or more effective . Test samples and ask a lot of questions. Again,
face-to-face meetings are the most beneficial.

While you do need to know your product inside and out) you
may not be an expert on every single component of your product,
and that's okay. Ask the real experts to educate you to the degree
you need to be able to sell it. You just need to understand:

 • Why you picked the final materials for your product. (For
instance: Are they lightweight? Cost-effective? Durable? etc.)

 • How to explain the benefits of those materials to your custom
ers. Those benefits become even clearer when you have tried the
    wrong version of something.

 • The availability of the material, and trends in its pricing (as those
factors will affect your product's production and pricing).

Feel the different materials to experience why you like one over
another. If you have found a few options that would work, ask the
expert to explain why he would choose one material over another.
Take copious notes, because a small detail can easily slip between
the cracks early on, but once you understand more, you will grasp
why that little detail is meaningful.
