It’s more powerful to do what Ron McCann did. Set
yourself up as the expert in your field. Writing a book (or
hiring someone to do it) will work. It positions you as
an expert.
• Tom Peters became the expert on excellence when
his book came out.
• Lee Iaccoca’s autobiography and book on leadership
became best sellers.
• Harvey Mackay’s speaking career soared when his
books hit the stands.
• The late Dave Thomas, founder of Wendy’s, wrote a
book on his ideas for achieving success.
• Dan Kennedy writes books to draw in new customers.
• Donald Trump and Richard Branson have each writ-
ten several books.
• And my book on P.T. Barnum, There’s a Customer
Born Every Minute, makes the public aware of him.
And the businesses of every one of these people
improved. (Had you ever heard of Harvey Mackay
before he wrote a book?)
If you feel you aren’t smart enough or important
enough to be considered an expert on anything, think
about what Bruce Barton wrote in 1920:
“Lincoln said a wonderfully wise thing one day. ‘I have
talked with great men,’ he said, ‘and I cannot see wherein
they differ from others.’”
By the way, Barton’s father was an expert on the life
of Abraham Lincoln. He wrote several biographies of
