Need for Quantitative Assessment
Current Approach
▪ Although the buffer zone was introduced to manage
risks, the elements at risk and their vulnerability are not
being considered.
▪ A buffer zone or even factor of safety that varies with
the consequences of failure, is therefore required.
▪ Furthermore, rather than having a very wide buffer,
there are other management and engineering
measures that could be considered to reduce the risks
of landslides.
