CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background
The ability to communicate in writing is necessary in today's globalized
society. Writing skills, particularly in English as a foreign language (EFL), facilitate
effective communication among individuals with diverse cultural and linguistic
backgrounds, serving various purposes (Widodo, 2008). In educational settings,
other practitioners (such as Khair et al., 2022; Pratiwi et al., 2022) claim that writing
abilities significantly impact how much students learn. Therefore, according to
Graham (2019), "writing is a fundamental skill (p. 277)" for students since they
need the ability to write about the information they have read or heard in class to
grasp it better. Lee (2017) asserts that writing proficiency contributes to a student's
academic success and leads to a helpful asset in the workplace. In addition, English
Study Program provides students with support in developing their EFL writing
skills, which are essential for completing assignments and theses as part of their
academic requirements.
Argumentative writing is one of the writing skills for academic purposes and
is typical for higher education students in various disciplines. Therefore, teaching
students how to write high-quality argumentative writing has been a cause of
concern for many lecturers and scholars in higher education. This genre requires
students to construct an argument regarding the given issue and support their
primary assertion with evidence.
