SVMIC Advanced Practice Provider Collaboration: Assessing the Risk
Course Summary Checklist
The following strategies are provided to summarize some of
the topics covered and provide a framework to help ensure an
optimal collaborative relationship. This is not an all-inclusive list.
You are encouraged to complete SVMIC’s more detailed courses
on individual topics.
COMMUNICATION
☐ Remember that communication is key. It is not only
expected by the governing licensure boards, but by
patients who rely on team-based care for optimal safety.
☐ Engage in a thorough informed consent discussion, and
document the details of the discussion.
☐ If a patient refuses treatment recommendations, review
the rationale for the recommendation in layman’s terms,
emphasizing the probably consequences of refusal.
Document the details of this discussion.
☐ Develop a set of visit summary questions to end each
patient encounter to ensure mutual understanding of
orders/actions and next steps.
☐ Become familiar and knowledgeable with the state
rules, regulations, and requirements. Start with each
practitioner’s respective professional board.
☐ Carefully monitor the APP and consider reviewing most
records during the initial employment period.
☐ Develop a system to regularly review the APP’s work and
quality assurance.
