Virginia
Collaborating with nurse practitioners requires a periodic review of
patient charts or electronic patient records by a patient care team
physician and may include provisions for visits to the site where
healthcare is delivered in the manner and at the frequency determined
by the patient care team.
No defined percentage of medical record review is required for
physician assistants. Supervising physicians must review the “clinical
course and treatment plan” for any patient that has presented twice with
the same acute complaint during a “single episode of care” and has not
improved as expected. Further, as discussed above, the practice
18
agreement must outline a specific standard for how often the
supervising physician will review the physician assistant’s patient
charts. Such a standard must also address how often the supervising
19
physician will evaluate the treatment of patients suffering from
“continuing illness[es]”. The supervising physician must be “involved”
20
with such patients to some degree.
