Saluki families bred there are heterozygous in terms of hair texture.
The Bedouins pay no attention at all to beauty characteristics in the European sense, and
certainly not for uniform hair. Rather, they practise a sharp performance selection, supported
by criteria based on experience in criteria in the judgement of form. Young dogs, which are
characterised by body development as well as character, intelligence and orientation are
tried out for hunting. Larger offspring are practically only from those that have become
famous in hunting. Even today's state-subsidised Bedouin cannot afford to keep a bunch of
inferior dogs.
Moreover, he is constantly endeavouring to breed or own only those Salukis that he could
give to his Sheikh or a member of the Royal Family, a gift without having to sacrifice himself.
How it looks with this handling with the hair, I can illustrate using the example of my own
breeding. For I will use a short formulation which I hope you will find easy to understand:
DASMA, short-haired bitch, grey w. white "brand", bred by the Beni Hajr and mated there by a
short-haired, light beige dog, gave birth to 11 (!) healthy puppies.
Since she had suffered from an overarm injury during pregnancy, I only let her raise 4,
including DASMAN and GHARIBA.
Both light beige, all 4 short-haired.
LABA'AN, male, black with brown blaze, smooth appearance with very sparse, almost only
hinted at feathering on tail and leathers. (Genetically long-haired !)
THABYA, bitch, brown-red, short-haired
JET, bitch, black with red blaze, short-haired. From LABA'AN out of THABYA.
LABA'AN II, male, black/red, smooth. Currently in Schieferegg. By DASMAN out of JET.
THABYA II, female, brown-red, with abundant, black-mottled feathering on tail and ears.
By DASMAN out of JET, litter sister of LABA'AN II. The only long-hair among 7 puppies.
SHA'ILA, bitch, beige, with heavily feathered tail, but practically without feathering on ears.
Bred by the Dawasir Bedouins.
