Sloughis are homozygous short-haired. Salukis are short-haired and feathered and are
therefore mixed. They are therefore fundamentally different types, and could also be
called different ecological landraces.
In part, it reads like a detective story about how this mix-up came about. There are a few
scams in it. But also the attitude of colonial arrogance. And the deliberate ignoring of
facts and rules. And fraudulent labelling. Have I forgotten something? Ah yes, ignorance.
Nothing seems impossible. The only thing that seems impossible is to breed a Sloughi of
the North African type.
For impatient readers, a brief overview of the individual chapters and topics follows.
These five-minute summaries summarise the content of the questions examined. If you

An introduction to the subject of pedigree,
appearance, whether feathered or smooth
in the Saluki. From the Arabian Peninsula
by Elisabeth Dawsari. She married the
Sheikh of the Dawsari Bedouins and can
give us important insights into Bedouin
culture.
The photo shows La'aban from Saudi
Arabia, whose owner Barghash got him
from the Bedouin tribe of Bani Khaldi from
Bahrain. He has light feathering on his ears
and tail, which is typical of the Arabian
Peninsula.

La'aban is interesting because through him we meet Dr. John Burchard, who imported
Sha'ila from the Dawsari and Jet from the Saudi Prince Muqrin to Switzerland. Jet is the
mother of Laba'an II Al Khalij, who was short-haired, and his sister Thabya II Al Khalij,
who was heavily feathered on her ears and tail. Page 13.
