Motivation for mixing Sloughi and Saluki.
Xavier Przezdziecki was a passionate
supporter of sighthound racing. He was
involved in Algeria and Morocco and set up
sighthound racing stadiums. Later, he also
campaigned for sighthound racing in
France.
As imports from North Africa threatened to
dry up, Salukis were brought from Beirut to
Marseille for around fifteen years from
Algiers’ racetrack, 1950s © Przezdziecki
around 1930. "Dedicated breeders" from
France, Switzerland and Germany also
brought Salukis to North Africa "in order to
stabilise the small population of Sloughis
through rebuilding work". Page 29.
The landraces Saluki and Sloughi, use for
breeding according to FCI, KC, and AKC
Two statements by Dr. John Burchard,
importer of Salukis, and Prof. Dr. Helmut
Quaritsch, President of the German
Sighthound Racing and Breeding
Association DWZRV 1986 / 87.
Prof Dr. Quaritsch notes that breeding
according to a standard is artificial
breeding. He believes that Mme Rey was Hunt in northern Tunisia, 2010s © Ochi
deceived by Laba'an II Al Khalij. Laba'an II
Al Khalij covered three daughters of the
Saluki Jenna from Syria bred by Mme Rey.
Dr. John Burchard, on the other hand, describes the relatively stable relationships
between the phenotypic characteristics of Salukis on the Arabian Peninsula and assigns
short-haired and feathered types to specific strains. In some strains, mixed types also
occur, even in one litter. Examples of short-haired Salukis from different areas of the
Middle East. Page 33.
