Background

The government’s planning for a new development on Sindulang Satu, Manado by building a reclamation for the new CBD center which has the potential to increase the
economy and tourists, also encourage development of its surroundings. However, the planning do not pay attention to the lives of local fishing community. Reclamation limits
direct access to the sea, eliminates boat parking spaces along the coastline, and eliminates the homes of local fishing community along the coast. At the present time, the
welfare of the residents of Sindulang Satu is in stark contrast to the residents of the old city of Manado across the Tondano river. The majority of Sindulang Satu residents work
as fishermen and traders with an income of 40-50 thousand rupiah/day. This reclamation development will also have an impact on coral reef habitats. In addition, fishing is
also slowly destroying Manado’s marine life. One of the factors is the lack of insight of fishing community. Most of the population’s education is only up to elementary school
level because there are only a few public junior high schools. Residents who can’t afford it have to drop out of school after elementary level.
