We started our journey with Newfoundlands in
1979 when we purchased our first Landseer
girl. We had seen them on TV where they were
demonstrating their swimming abilities. I did
some research on the breed and was totally
smitten with them. Maybe one day I thought.
It was my wedding anniversary when we would
usually take a trip somewhere nice for the day.
That day we were off to Harrogate and York. I
wondered at the distance for this trip as it was
quite a run from our home.
We pulled in off the road into this long drive to
a large house. By now I am wondering what
is going on until in to view came this pen. In
this pen where a large litter of bouncing baby
Newfoundlands. Happy Anniversary. Choose
one!!” says my husband. I don’t think that choice
of present will ever be beaten.
This was the start of a lifetime of
Newfoundlands. Breeding,showing and working
them to this present day

We had our first Baranova newfoundland litter
in 1981. We were very lucky to be able to use a
super Champion dog from a very good kennel
that started us off on the right foot. We kept a
black bitch out of this litter, Baranova Storm
Vogel. In her short show career, we were thrilled
she gained a CC and RCC. We were so pleased
with this from our first litter.
Since then the Baranova kennel has enjoyed
success in the ring gaining Champion status
over the years.
A very big plus side for us is the working side to
owning Newfoundlands. Throughout the summer
months we train in the water every two weeks
with a group of likeminded people. Throughout
the winter we draught train with the dogs.
In the water the puppies and dogs can start off
from any age. Simple exercises like swimming
out a few metres to their owners to start with
or just swimming out to fetch a toy. This builds
up slowly until the dog will swim out to the boat
