Unfortunately we were not allowed to take
any photographs of the actors or the sets. His
trainer would not allow anyone to take photos of
Theo either, so this was a little disappointing.
We couldn’t believe how many people it took
to make a film, the caterers were wonderful
considering the amount of people they had to
feed.
We were there for about a fortnight and he
never put a foot wrong and we were so grateful
for the opportunity to experience it with him. I
wouldn’t hesitate to do it again, especially when
the filming company were so gracious about the
fact he was a family pet rather than a working
dog.
After his film debut he became known as ‘The
Film Star’ and everyone wanted his autograph!
He went on to do children’s cart rides to raise
money for charity with a group called UK
Rescue Bears at some fantastic venues such
as Chatsworth Horse Trials, Blenheim Palace
and Bolesworth Castle, as well as some water
demonstrations.
The water demonstrations consisted of
Newfoundland dogs rescuing people that were
“drowning”, by either swimming out to them and
bringing them back by holding onto their hand
or they would take a life ring or some other
flotation object out to them and pull them back
to the shore. Theo’s favourite rescue was to
jump from a boat moving at speed to the person
struggling in the water and they would hold onto
him by his harness and he would pull them to
shore. He would also go out to rescue people in
a boat, if for instance the engine broke down, by
towing the boat back to shore with a rope.
Whilst all the dogs we have owned over the
years have been part of the family, it has been
wonderful to take part in so many events with
Theo and I can’t imagine that we will have so
many opportunities with another dog in the
future.
