Section 4 – Transporting
Section 4 – Transporting
It is important to follow the Combine Operators Manual for correct tire configuration,
specification and inflation pressures.
Important: Follow local regulations regarding width, lighting and marking. The use of a spotter or a
pilot vehicle is recommended on busy, narrow, or hilly roads and when crossing bridges.
4.1 – Preparing Combine For Transport
Some local laws prohibit road operation with a header attached. Contact local law enforcement prior to road
operation to see if this is permitted. It is recommended that a trailer is used to transport corn heads with a
transport width wider than 20ft (6m). If the corn head is attached to the combine for transport, proceed as
follows.
1) Ensure the grain tank is empty. Driving at high speed with the grain tank full can cause tire failure.
2) Fold down grain tank extensions and extension auger (if equipped).
3) Swing in and secure the unloading auger.
4) If using a folding corn head, fold the corn head.
5) Turn on combine flashing warning lights.
6) Couple the combine brake pedals together.
7) Raise the corn head to a position that will keep it off the ground but still allow good visibility.
8) Drive at a speed that is safe for conditions.
Danger: The mounted corn head influences speed, steering and braking capability –
observe sufficient steering and braking capability.
4.2 – Loading Corn Head on Trailers
For corn heads with a transport width wider than 20ft (6m) it is recommended that the head is loaded on a
transport trailer.
Danger: When locking or unlocking the corn head to some combines, it is necessary to go
underneath the corn head. If this is required, raise the feeder house all the way up and
lower the feeder house lift cylinder safety stops before going under the corn head. Failure
to do so could result in serious injury or death.
Use only trailers with a proper weight rating, correct pad configuration for the corn head and
sufficient lighting and tie down locations to properly secure the corn head. See table 9.1 for corn head
weights and specifications.
1) Configure the landing pads and the main cross beam on the trailer to the correct setting for the corn
head. The skid shoes on the corn head should be resting on the main beam.
2) Disconnect all electrical and hydraulic connections.
3) Disconnect and store the drive shafts.
4) Disconnect the latching mechanisms.
5) Place the corn head on the trailer in a location that will not overload any axles or create too much tongue
weight.
6) Lower the feeder house until it clears the corn head adapter.
7) Back the combine away from the corn head.
