While we have all been focused on the Pandemic, it remains critical that NEW DESERT HORIZONS

residents and those returning residents better understand the role of the Desert Horizons Emer-
gency Preparedness Committee and the responsibilities of individual home owners. The recent

swarm of earthquakes at the Salton Sea and the Apple and Lakes fires highlight the dangers we all
must be prepared to face at a moment’s notice.

It is the responsibility of every individual homeowner to ensure that your home provides a safe

environment to you and your family members and pets. Moreover, it is the responsibility of each
resident to assess their individual needs and prepare to be self-sufficient in terms of food, water,

medications & energy supplies for a period of 7-10 days. You can obtain information to aid you in

making these critical determinations in the Emergency Preparedness section of the new Owners
Association website under “Resource Center”. Further, upon request, members of the Emergency

Preparedness Committee are available to assist if you need additional help.

The Emergency Preparedness Committee DOES NOT stockpile food or water for distribution to
residents in a disaster. Nor does the Committee provide MEDICAL treatment in a disaster. Rather,

the Committee is a group of volunteer residents whose primary function is to educate residents as
to how to best prepare themselves so as to minimize the effects of any disaster AND who subse-

quent to any disaster will attempt to assess damage within Desert Horizons, convey our needs to
the City of Indian Wells and other governmental agencies, and assist residents with basic disaster

response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster FIRST

      AID Operations.

We also ask that you join the Emergency Preparedness Committee as a Block Captain or First Aid
Team member since we have lost many members due to home sales, death, infirmity and the Pan-

demic. Remember that many of our Canadian residents may not be able to cross the border this
Fall, and we need others to step up and fill in until they return. If interested,

please contact the undersigned for additional information.
