REGIONAL COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSON REPORT
Sororal Year 2019
Y. E. S. Program Committee: S. T. E. A. M. Regional Chair: Soror Joyce Irby
Briefly describe and highlight exemplary programs reported by chapters of the region.
Summarize exemplary reports only and list the contributing chapters at the end of the report.
I count it a privilege to serve as the Eastern Region STEAM Chair. Six chapters submitted their
reports: IOTA, PI, BETA LAMBDA, DELTA PI, and EPSILON ALPHA.
Iota: Chapter's after-school Robotics Program was extremely successful. Students learned to
communicate their newly gained knowledge of technology and engineering using robots. Xinos
engaged in bonding and team building activities using STEM Challenges
Pi: Chapter invited their children, grandchildren, and relatives to use computers to access
educational programs. Zoom Conferences were used for committee meetings. Sorors enjoyed
workshops to hone their skills with iPhones, iPads and other devices. A STEAM Spelling Bee was
planned in conjunction with their school district to promote etymology, pronunciation and
comprehension. Workshops were scheduled for teachers as well. Due to COVID-19, the
competition was canceled.
Beta Lambda: helped with hosting the annual STEM CAMP ON THURMOND at a local church.
Several Sorors and Xinos were involved in providing Reading stations, Line Dancing, Bridge
Building, Coding with Ozobots, and other activities along with field trips. Eastern Region
Director Dr. Patsy Squire attended the closing celebration.
Delta Pi: Sorors were engaged in hands-on activities to integrate Common Core Math and Next
Generation Science. A survey was given to Sorors to see what technology skills they would like to
learn. The ARTS were infused through their African American program, the book club, the
reading program and through attending plays and movies.
Epsilon Alpha: is focused on the technology part of STEAM throughout the year. Zoom
conference calls are used for committee meetings. They also want to provide Zoom meetings
for their sick and shut-in Sorors to allow them to be active. Google.Docs and other formats
were used to disseminate reports, flyers and other documents.
Recommendation: My goal is to see our chapter reports for STEAM reach over 80% which is
possible due to all the technology that we have to do to continue our mission. As we choose
books for ourselves, book clubs and youth programs, select ones that feature women in the
STEAM careers. If you don't have chair, check to see if a math and/or science teacher would
team up with your tech person as a small committee.
Use STEAM Challenges with our youth groups for problem-solving and team-building. These
activities would be fun for Sorors as well.
Check out this organization, Girls Who Code at girlswhocode.com. They provide funding for
schools, organizations and other community agencies to have this club around the world.
Respectfully
Joyce Irby
