NATIONAL SORORITY OF PHI DELTA KAPPA, INC. • 80TH ANNUAL EASTERN REGIONAL CONFERENCE
National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc.
REGIONAL COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSON REPORT
Sororal Year 2019
Y. E. S. Program Committee: Teach-A-Rama Regional Chair: Soror Monica Lewis
Alpha: The Alpha Chapter of NSPDK, Inc. hosted its annual Teach-a-Rama on October 5th at
the Hudson County School of Technology. There were over 80 people in attendance for the
event that focused on Healthy Minds and Healthy Bodies. Participants were able to participate
in: Zumba (Tia Gist), Yoga (Kristen Beriloff), Nutrition (Lynette Hem-Lee), Meditation
(Kristen Beriloff), Physical Fitness (Retro Fitness) and a session on how to keep their “Brain
Fit” (Lisa Charles). Their youth were also engaged in fitness of the mind and body as they
learned to meditate, discussed the importance of physical fitness and participated in physical
activities. The time with youth was also used to educate them and their parents on financial
planning for college. James Johnson shared with parents, our Xinos and Kudos the importance
of planning early for college and shared information on where they could find resources.
Gamma: Trauma Informed Care was held at the Radisson at Cross Keys in Baltimore, MD.
Gamma sorors presented valuable information about their students in Baltimore City who are
struggling at times with absences and missed work to 25 participants. Four sorors--Candice
Logan-Washington, Alisa Jackson-Purvis, Donna Rice, and Curtisha Wilson--informed the
members of the audience of possible factors with trauma and ended with possible solutions to
the problem. Packets were distributed with resources available in Baltimore City. The audience
enjoyed the presentation immensely and requested future presentations about the topic. Trauma
Informed Care will be an ongoing topic of presentations throughout the sororal year.
Theta: A Celebration of Scholarship and Black Women Inventors was held at Bethany Baptist
Church in Brooklyn, NY with 75 participants. During our Teach-A-Rama program we celebrate
the accomplishments of our "Youth" and highlight the contributions of "Black Women
Inventors" - the unsung innovators of our time. Participants engaged in lengthy discussions and
explorations of Black Women Inventors and presented. We also honored the commitments of
our Sorors who continue to be a beacon for our Chapter and our Youth by supporting the
endeavors of NSPDK, Inc. and sustaining our chapter. Our program ended with a sumptuous
lunch.
Iota: Soror Tamara Mingo and committee presented participants from the Forever Ladies Group
(Title I – Atlantic City Board of Education) an engaging S.T.E.M. interactive project at their
monthly meeting. The Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics programs had the
ladies ages 22-83 completely engrossed in their learning. The learning curve was amazing! Two
groups were instructed to complete extensive puzzles as teams communicating without talking;
two groups built towers of red cups using only a mechanism (never physically touching the
actual cups) starting with a stack of cups; and the other groups divided into partners back to back
with one directing the other with verbal communication only to duplicate a drawing unseen to
scale. Everyone had a delightful experience as shown in the evaluations.
