SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER
SHREVEPORT’S SAVORY STUFFED SHRIMP LEGACY
Shreveport-style stuffed shrimp is a local delicacy that originated in the kitchen of the Freeman & Harris Café, a historic Black-owned
restaurant that, at the time of its closing, was one of the oldest Black-owned restaurants in the U.S. These large, succulent shrimp are
stuffed with fiery Creole dressing, deep-fried and served with a spicy tartar sauce. Try them at Eddie’s Seafood and Soulfood Restaurant,
which was named one of the “Best Soul Food Restaurants in the South” by Southern Living in October 2015. Shreveport-style stuffed
shrimp are also available at a number of other eateries around town including Orlandeaux’s Café, a fine dining Creole restaurant with
stunning views of Cross Lake in Shreveport.
THE MYSTERIOUS SOUTHERN MAID DONUTS JINGLE: ARE YOU TEAM ELVIS OR TEAM JOHNNY?
Was it Johnny Cash or Elvis Presley who wrote a jingle for the delectable breakfast treat? From 1948-1960 The Louisiana Hayride rocked
the radio waves broadcasting a weekly showcase of talented musical artists from Shreveport, Louisiana. Many famous musicians got their
start and their breakfast here, including Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash. The local Southern Maid Donuts quickly became a favorite, and
even earned a shout out on the nationwide radio show. Who wrote the jingle? Sources conflict each other. A quick search online turns up
a Johnny Cash jingle for the southern donut chain, after he praises the deliciousness of their donuts. However, other sources, including
historians, claim that the Elvis Presley version of the jingle exists but was lost. This would have been the only food item promoted by Elvis
Presley throughout his entire career if the stories are true. Solve this mouthwatering mystery yourself, by grabbing a box of Southern Maid
donuts and touring the iconic Shreveport Municipal Auditorium.
HISTORIC SHREVEPORT RESTAURANT TURNED CHIC NEW EATERY

cocktail music and free cocktails at happy hour. Their new menu acclaims their history by offering their own fried chicken recipe as one
of their daily specials. They also have an extensive breakfast menu.
