Page 29 - How Sophie Grumble Guts Got Her Name
P. 29
Each morning, the Dogfather would feed the ducks who lived on
the creek. Sophie loved to come speeding across the grass and
scatter them back into the water. What great fun! She would
then sometimes eat some of the food and wheat that was put
out for their breakfast. “You need to be careful, Soph”, said
Mum. “You might develop a beak and wings and webbed feet if
you eat the duck food too often”.
Sophie also discovered (what to her were) the joys of eau’ de
duck doo. She loved to roll in it and smear it right through her
white silky coat. She thought the aroma wafting up around her
was divine – but it seemed her parents did not share her joy.”
Oh Sophie, what have you done,” Mum sighed. ”I really don’t
have time for this now – I have to go to work. Come on, you’ll
need to get that washed off in the sink”. “I’m sure I don’t see
why”, Sophie huffed –“it smells amazing!”
