Pete H: But he showed up out there. I said that – The big point I'm trying to make here is
that we're talking about the late 60s in the United States of America and we're

just trying to get the damn right to vote. We’re trying to get the damn right to just
be a normal human being somewhere out there.

Well anyway, to not talk too long on this, an individual who was in command of
me in the early 80’s has not somehow made this great change in himself and is
going to put me under his wing, if you know what I mean.

He ain’t gone be hugging Peter Hargrove and go “Son you’re doing great.” No. That
ain’t how it works and you know that's not how it works. I saw an individual –
what I was saying to you that you know there's paths that you take to try to
guarantee yourself a good follow-on assignment. One of those paths is not to bail
out of flying on the line with the students after nine months and go on to the
academic squadron and teach whatever you teach…And that is how it went on
with certain folks that were around you.

Dave, Doug left the squadron after nine months, didn't want to have blank to do
with students. He hated the fact that he was back there as an instructor, but what
does he end up getting, an F-16 because his wife was the veterinarian for people
                              with dogs or something.

Ivan: Even this notion that, that's been around for decades that certain – How can I put
it? Certain black people were more acceptable. You know, in order to be accepted,
you've got to behave a certain way. You know what I'm saying?

Pete H: Oh yeah. You know some people definitely thought I was a good n***r until I had
to let them know, you crossed the line. You know what I mean. That’s just that.
Because there is a line and I don’t – Well, I don’t play some of those games. And

yes, I'm a pretty calm fellow. I'm pretty – I can speak eloquently if I need to. And I
can speak whatever...Anyway let me hit that other subject for you. The one about
my classmate at the table, my table mate in pilot training. Part of the reason he
was my table mate is that our instructor was kinda new…

Ivan: Can you tell me in non-pilot terms what is a table mate?

Pete H: We walked in at the beginning of the day or whatever part of the day, and we sit
down beside each other. There is an instructor on the other side of the table.
