wasn’t going to fly fighters. I was like, you’ve got to come a little bit more correct
than that. I wasn’t going to let that stand.
So three years after that, I went and flew the 135 (KC-135) for two years through
Desert Storm. And then after Desert Storm, I went back and instructed again as a
37 (T-37) Instructor Pilot out at Randolph. Teaching people how to teach.
Pete H: I got you.
Ivan: But, I was meeting people and I was putting my records in front of their faces. And
I was letting it be known out there that I wasn’t just going to sit still on this. That’s
how I ended up meeting Colonel Daniels at the time, who was at the Guard
Bureau. I was about to go to go TDY over to Europe in the tanker and I went and
got myself an O’Club (Officer’s Club) card. So, I was one of four people in the
O’Club that night. Me getting a beer, Colonel Daniels who was not in uniform and
his sister and daughter. It's amazing that all of them are deceased now. But Julius
and Peggy Hargrove taught their children common courtesies. And I was in the
O’Club and they were the only other people in there and I said, “How are you all
doing tonight?” And that boosted my relationship with him. That was – I called
him my “Guardfather”, National Guard. I called him my Guardfather. Yeah but, I
gave him –– I ended up talking to him about stuff, visiting some people and getting
my record out there, to where people just flat out owned up to it. You know you
were asking me, “Well, how did anybody know? When my record went in front of
these folks, it was like, – everybody was like, “Oh yeah. Somebody that’s got those
feathers in their hat.” They are definitely somebody that you would watch to see
good things happen. Well, good things didn’t happen because Vance Air Force
Base didn’t want good things to happen to me. And that's just that. But anyway
yeah, my record started going around and you know there are plenty of FAIPs out
there in different walks of life and plenty of them were at the Guard Bureau and
we just started asking the question in different places.
I almost ended up in Vermont. San Antonio was my first choice, and you know
they were just jumping up and down to accept me into their unit. (sarcasm)
Ivan: Oh, you had to go to the Guard to get your fighter?
Pete H: Bingo.
Ivan: So you had to leave active duty and go to the Guard.
