AGING WITH SICKLE CELL DISEASE:
IS AGE REALLY JUST A NUMBER?
Dr. Charity Oyedeji will describe the unique changes and health care needs of adults
with sickle cell disease as they age. She will also discuss potential strategies to maintain
and improve function in older adults with sickle cell disease.
Dr. Oyedeji is an assistant professor in the Division of Hematology at the Duke Adult
Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center. She grew up in Houston, Texas. She completed a
combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency at the University of Rochester in the
Community Health and Advocacy Resident Education (CARE) Track and Hematology
Fellowship at Duke University.
Her interest in Hematology sprouted from her losing family members to complications of
sickle cell disease. She is also inspired by witnessing several of her family members age
gracefully with the disease. Her research is focused on improving care for older adults with
sickle cell disease and promoting healthy aging.
She has received several aging and hematology awards through the National Institute
on Aging, Pepper Older Americans Independence Center, the American Society of
Hematology and the Duke Research to Advance Healthcare Equity for her studies focused
on developing the Sickle Cell Disease Functional Assessment (SCD-FA) tool and qualitative
research focused on understanding the unique experiences of older adults with sickle cell
disease. Her goal is to improve management and quality of life for people living with sickle
cell disease.
