Over-the-Counter Drugs are those drugs that we can buy at the pharmacy or drugstore with-
out the need of a prescription from a doctor. The government does not control these drugs
because it does not have any side effects on the patient or on the consumers.
3. What are controlled drugs or Prescription drugs?
Sample answer:
These are drugs regulated by the government because they may cause a side effect on the
patient once taken on an abusive manner. These need the approval from the doctor before we
can avail them. It is also known as regulated drugs since the government controls the public’s
use because of its addictive substance or side effect once abused.
1. You are a pharmacist. A customer is asking for a recommendation for diar-
rhea. He has been experiencing it for days. The customer is asking for the
difference of the brands you are offering.
Sample answer:
I can recommend Imodium and Lomotil. Imodium slows the rhythm of digestion so that the
small intestines could have more time to absorb fluids and nutrients from the foods you eat.
It is also used to reduce the amount of stool in people who have an ileostomy or re-routing of
the bowel through a surgical opening in the stomach. On the other hand, Lomotil is an anti-
diarrhea and anti-cholinergic combination. It works by decreasing the motion of muscles in
the intestines and prolonging the time, it takes to move the contents through the body. If you
still need to work and you do not want to go to the toilet every now and then, I suggest that
you take Imodium. However, if you are going home to take a rest, you can take in Lomotil since
you can release the toxins easily with your frequent visit to the toilet.
2. Your boss is experiencing minor arthritis and headache that he had a hard
time concentrating of his paper works. You had seen his agony and remem-
bered your father’s experience. You decided to go to the pharmacy for an
Over-The-Counter medication.
Sample answer:
Miss, I want to buy a medication for headache and minor arthritis. Could you give me Easprin
975 mg. Just to make sure, I can give this to the patient as long as he does not have bleeding
tendencies or allergies, right. Otherwise, it will produce side effects and it cannot cure the pa-
tient. Instead, bring them harm. I remember that information from a doctor’s instruction. My
father used to have Minor arthritis.
