W:I ’m just trying to schedule my classes for next quarter. It's not going very well
M: Really? What’s wrong?
W: Well , 1 really want to take this anthropology lecture. The professor is very famous and the syllabus looks
greal. 1 know 1 would learn a lot
M: So, what’s the problem?
W: The class is every Tuesday and Thursday evening , which is when 1 have basketball practice
M: Is that important? 1 think that academics are more impαtant than sports. You came to university to study,
not play. You should quit basketball
W: But, basketball is my passion. 1’ve been playing for so long. If 1 want to qualify for the national team , 1 have
to keep working at it
M: What about this anthropology course? You still need a science credit for your degree and 1 know that you
loved the last course you took
W: That’s true. However, 1 came to this university on a basketball sch이 arship and my coach told us that we
can’t have more than three absences per quarter if we want to stay on the team
M: 1 guess you’11 have to choose which is more important for your future
W: 1 wish 1 knew what to do

at the same time. There are many reasons to take the course. The teacher is very famous and the woman
would leam a 101. Second, she needs science credits to graduate. Also, she really likes anthropology. However,
there are also reasons to go to basketball practice. It is her passion and she has been playing for a long time
She has to practice because she wants to play for the national team. She al80 has a basketball scholarship
1 think she should quit basketball. Her classes are much more important for her future. She needs good

W: Hi, Matl. Are you coming to my birthday party? We’re going out for dinner and then to a movie. The movie

M: Sure, when is it?
W: Tomorrow night
M: Tomorrow. That’s too bad. 1 won’t be able to make it because 1’ve got other plans
W: My birthday only comes once a year. What could be more important?
M: 1 ’m the assistant coach of my little brother’s soccer team. We have a very important qualifying game tomorrow
1 have to be there
W: If you’re the assistant, there must be another coach. 1’m sure it won’t be a problem if you skipped. No one
will notice
M: My brother will definitely notice my absence. He really depends on me and 1 don’t want to let him down
W: That’s really too bad. A lot of our friends from high school are going to be there. 1’m sure they’11 be upset
that you weren’t there
M: 1 guess they will. Of course 1’d like to see them too. It would be a lot of fun. However, 1 should keep my
promise. 1 can ’t decide right now
