First, an object is designed
using Computer-Aided Design
(CAD) software.

Plastic filament (a spool of plastic
“thread”) is heated and pushed
through the print head, or extruder,
building up the shape of an object
on the print bed.

Within a short period of time, the
printed object is complete. Home-
based 3D printers can produce
items made out of plastic that are
the same quality as plastic
building bricks.
