“An die Sonne” was written by the German poet Johann Peter Uz and set to music by
Schubert in 1816.

O Sonne, Königin der Welt, O sun, queen of the world,
Die unser dunkles Leben erhellt; Who illuminates our dark life;
In lichter Majestät; In glorious majesty;
Erhab’nes Wunder einer Hand, Wondrous miracle of a hand
Die jene Himmel ausgespannt Which spread out the heavens
Und Sterne hingesät! And filled it with the stars!

Noch heute seh’ ich deinen Glanz, Even today I see your splendor,
Mir lacht in ihrem Blumenkranz I still smile at nature’s floral wreath today.
Noch heute die Natur.
Der Vögel buntgefiedert Heer The colorfully feathered army of birds
Singt morgen mir vielleicht nicht mehr may not be singing tomorrow
Im Wald, und auf der Flur. in the woods and in the meadow.

Ich fühle, daß ich sterblich bin, I sense that I am mortal,
Mein Leben welkt wie Gras dahin, My life withers like grass,
Wie ein verschmachtend Laub. Like fading leaves.
Wer weiß, wie unerwartet bald Who knows how unexpectedly soon the
Des Höchsten Wort an mich erschallt: Supreme Word will ring out to me:
Komm wieder in den Staub! Come back into the dust!

Dem dunkeln Schoβ der Heilgen Erde Johannes Brahms (1833 – 1897)
Johannes Brahms is widely considered one of the greatest composers of the 19th
century and a leading composer in the Romantic style. Born in Hamburg, Germany into a
Lutheran family, Brahms spent much of his professional life in Vienna. He composed for
symphony orchestra, chamber ensembles, piano, organ, and chorus, and wrote over 200
songs.
