The La Galigo Manuscript
The Manuscript
For many Buginese people, the story in La Galigo is believed to be true, and
the genealogy of the nobility is often traced back to the time of
Sawérigading. This faith was so strong that during the Darul Islam terror
in South Sulawesi, the pre-Islamic La Galigo manuscripts were considered
heretical and dangerous.
The sheer size of the La Galigo manuscript makes it impossible for any
single manuscript to contain the entire text. The manuscripts that have
been scattered contain only long episodes or small fragments, but all of
them remain important as cultural heritage and Bugis identity. The La
Galigo manuscript has also been designated as a world memory
inscription by UNESCO in 2011.
Inscribed as the Memory of the World register in 2011
