The Kartini
L E T T E R S A N D A R C H I V E
INDONESIA, BELANDA
Raden Ajeng Kartini (1879–1904) is well-known as a Javanese woman
whose ideas about education and women's emancipation were ahead
of her time. Her letters, first published in 1911 under the title Door
duisternis tot licht (Out of Darkness into Light), made her known to the
world as a symbol of the struggle for gender equality. The Kartini idea
inspired the establishment of schools for indigenous women during the
colonial period, was translated into various languages, and even
gained international recognition through UNESCO, with world figures
such as Eleanor Roosevelt contributing introductions.
In Indonesia, respect for Kartini is manifested by designating April 21 as
Kartini Day and granted her as a National Heroine. Almost 120 years
after her passing, Kartini's ideas remain alive and relevant, becoming a
topic of discussion on education, feminism, and gender equality at
both the national and global levels. Kartini's words continue to
transcend time, proving that even as time passes, her spirit remains
steadfast.
