Exploring Indonesia
The Mangkunegaran dance archive contains 1,595 textual
documents and 640 photographs documenting 50
traditional Javanese dances, complete with their creation,
rules, philosophy, dance movements, musical notation, and
historical development. Handwritten by Mangkunegaran IV–
VII, this collection is the most complete, oldest, and richest
documentation of traditional dance in the world.
Besides serving as proof of the authenticity of Indonesian
art, this archive is also an important reference for the
development of classical dance for current and future
generations, as well as a rare and globally valuable
authentic cultural heritage. Due to its uniqueness, this
archive has been designated as Memory of the World
register by UNESCO in 2025.
