ARCHIVES OF JAVANESE DANCE :
Mangkunegaran
The Mangkunegaran Palace in Surakarta preserves valuable
Javanese cultural heritage, one of which is the Mangkunegaran
dance art. This dance is not only beautiful, but also rich in local
wisdom, philosophy, and cultural identity. Since the time of
Mangkunegaran IV (1861) to Mangkunegaran VII (1944), this
dance was created, documented, and is now stored in the Reksa
Pustaka Library, complete with notes on dance rules, movements,
philosophy, and photos of performances that have gone global.
As a classical art form of the Javanese
royal court, Mangkunegaran dance
includes bedhaya-srimpi, solo dance,
Javanese opera, and wireng, which
depicts military life. Wireng dance
became the most dominant with
heroic stories such as Karna
Tinandhing and Gathutkaca-
Dhadhungawuk. More than just
entertainment, this dance symbolizes
heroism, power, and resistance against
colonialism, and to this day remains
an inspiration and important reference
for future generations of Javanese
culture.
