i.e.
The number 6 followed by the number 1 (6.1) translates dark ash blonde
The number 8 followed by the number 3 (8.3) translates light golden
blonde. In some cases, there are two numbers following the base shade
number, this second number is known as a secondary tone.
i.e.
The number 7 followed by the numbers 43 (7.43) translates as blonde
with copper tones and golden secondary tones. The next thing to come
into play is peroxide strengths, if the first number of the target shade
corresponds with the natural base shade then use 6% (20 volume
peroxide)
i.e.
Natural base colour 4 (brown) target shade 4.26 then mix 1 tube 4.26 +
75ml 6% (20 volume peroxide) apply from root to ends in one
application. If the first number of the target shade is only one shade
higher than the natural base shade then use 75 ml 9% (30 volume
peroxide) for one shade lift.
i.e.
Natural base colour 4 (brown) target shade 5.3 then mix 1 tube 5.3 +
75ml 9% (30 volume peroxide) apply from middle lengths to ends, after
twenty minutes mix fresh colour and apply to the roots and comb
through.
If the target shade is higher than the natural base shade by more than one
shade, then it will be necessary to pre-bleach the natural base shade to
correspond with the target base shade.
i.e.
Natural base colour 4 (brown) target shade 8.3 then mix 1 scoop of
powder bleach 100ml 9% (30 volume peroxide) + 100 ml shampoo. Very
quickly sponge the mixture through the hair within 2 mm from the scalp,
allow lifting to a pale yellow.
