THE STAUNCH TEST
Geena Davis
The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media is the only research-based
organisation working collaboratively within the entertainment industry to
create gender balance, foster inclusion and reduce negative stereotyping in
family entertainment media. Founded by the Academy Award winning Geena
Davis in 2004, the institute campaigns for better representation throughout
the industry, both in front of and behind the camera. It recognises that the way
girls and women are depicted on screen has a huge influence on young people
in particular. Their tagline “If she can see it, she can be it” says it all.
Witnessing women racing motor cars, becoming astronauts, entrepreneurs,
footballers, and so on, has made a huge difference to women joining those fields
and to those already working in them. Just as the world once had to adjust to
women becoming doctors, lawyers and heads of business. Role models matter.
