7. Tie the drainage tube loosely to the side of the bed using plaster to position it
N.B:
Make sure the catheter is in the bladder before inflating the balloon. If there is a pain
when inflating the balloon, then push the catheter further into the bladder
Use a long drainage tube, so that patient can move freely without pulling the tube out of
the bottle
Inspect the opening of the tube-leading balloon so that there is no leakage as this might
pull the catheter out of place or position
The end of the drainage tube should not be submerged in the urine in the drainage
bottle
D. Bladder irrigation
Definition: It is the washing out of the bladder
Purpose
To clean the bladder before operation depending on the surgeon’s order
To arrest bleeding from the bladder
To apply heat to the mucus lining
Equipment
A. Includes the complete set-up of catheterization bray. In addition, sterile funnel or
syringe or sterile bladder syringes, if available
o
B. A jug of sterile lotion as ordered at a temperature of 38 C.(the common solution used
are normal saline or boric acid )
C. Towel, mackintosh, sterile swab, lubricant, receiver for urine, catheter clamp, and pail
Procedure
1. If a catheter is already in the bladder
2. Draw solution into the syringe
3. Attach the syringe into the catheter
4. Instill the solution gently into the bladder
5. Withdraw the syringe and put the end of the catheter into a large receiver which is
placed on a sterile towel over a mackintosh
6. Repeat 2 or 3 times until the return solution is clear
7. Chart the amount of solution used. The amount and appearance of return flow
8. Remove Equipment from the bedside and leave the patient comfortable
N.B:
Care should be taken not to inject air into the bladder
2Not more than 180-300cc must be instilled at a time of a bladder operation has been
performed or the patient’s capacity is limited
