14 THE SOJOURNER
KNICKERBOCKER – WEST POINT #13 (LTC Jack H. Moore, Secretary).
On Sunday, 15 October 2023, 22 Sojourners, family members and friends met at the Old ’76 House in
Tappan, NY to honor two long standing members of our Chapter, Brothers Ted Jacobsen who has served as
our President for the past 5 years and Bill Maurer, longtime Commander of our Israel Putnam - Nathan
Hale Heroes of ’76 Camp. Meeting for brunch at the ’76 House is a favorite meeting place for our
members, not only for its excellent food but for its historical significance as America’s oldest tavern
founded in 1686. Its basement too, served as the prison for British Major John Andre during his trial and
subsequent execution for his collaboration with Benedict Arnold. Unfortunately, Brother Jacobsen, having
recently returned from overseas travel, was “under the weather” and unable to attend our gathering.
However, it was great seeing Brother Maurer and his family. Current Heroes Commander Ronald
Buchholz presented Bill with a memento from the Chapter for his many years of service. Following the
presentation, Secretary Moore conducted some business, to include voting and approving a $500.00
donation (requested from each Chapter) to assist our National Sojourner Headquarters to cover a $70,000
budget shortfall. The Brothers also agreed to make a $100.00 donation to our New York State Grand
Lodge answering their appeal for donations to support our Masonic Brothers in Israel. Finally, the Brothers
“passed the hat” and collected $185 for a distressed worthy Master Mason & Navy Veteran who was
seriously injured in a recent motorcycle accident and is currently undergoing rehabilitation and is out of
work. Future meeting dates were discussed. A January meeting and Heroes initiation was proposed for
Sunday 21 or 28 January 2024 at the West Point Masonic Lodge with the date to be finalized
