ISRAEL PUTNAM – NATHAN HALE CAMP,
Knickerbocker-West Point Chapter #13 (LTC Jack
Moore, Adjutant).
On Sunday, 4 February 2024, 11 Sojourners gathered
for their Winter Bivouac at the West Point Masonic
Lodge in Highland Falls, NY. Nine Heroes were
present for the initiation, to include Camp Commander
Ronald Buchholz along with fellow Heroes Avery
Toledo, Jack Moore, Howard Whitman, Robert
McLoughlin, Ronald Pomerance, Tom Horn, Tom
Lavinski and Ted Jacobsen. Recruits Floyd Burgher and
Michael LaFountain were sent orders earlier to report
to camp for processing. Upon investigation recruit
Burgher was found wandering with no legitimate
paperwork or orders. To rule out any “trickery,” the
Commander ordered several trips to the “D.” After
further interrogation it was revealed he had served as a
medical officer in the Middle East with numerous
heroic actions. That proved most beneficial for his
acceptance and membership into the Camp. Following
a lunch break the Officer of the Day discovered a 2nd
recruit, Michael LaFountain, lost and hungry. Upon
interrogation his incoherent responses resulted in
several trips to the “D” which gradually improved his
memory. An early winter thaw left behind several
chunks of ice that helped quicken his responses. He too
gave a great review of the historical facts and exploits
of Israel Putnam, one of our two Camp namesakes.
After much deliberation we were all pleased and he was
successfully inducted into our Heroes Camp.
