MESSA GE B Y
THE PRIME MINISTER OF M AL AYSI A
I n the past few decades, Malaysia has experienced a dramatic shift in
the trend of diseases, from infectious dieases to non-communicable
diseases (NCDs). The transition from undernutrition during the era of
independence to diet-related chronic diseases, resulting in the double
burden of malnutrition, is alarming and needs to be painstakingly
addressed.
The revision of the National Nutrition Policy of Malaysia (NNPM) is indeed
timely to make it relevant to current and future health issues that may be
envisaged. The policy is a mandate from the government with the
impetus of maintaining, enhancing and achieving the well-being of the
population. It aims to elevate the nutritional status of the population,
reduce diet-related NCDs and strengthen food and nutrition security.
Concerted effort from all the relevant ministries and agencies as well as
non-governmental organisations and the private sector to implement
this policy is fundamental in tackling the current challenges, especially
the rising trend of diet-related NCDs. I believe this policy will provide
guidance and the way forward especially to the policy makers and
implementers.
Thus, I would like to express my utmost gratitude to the Ministry of Health
Malaysia and other stakeholders who have provided their valuable input
and support in the revision of this policy, which is critical for the
nutritional well-being of the population. I ardently hope that this policy
will be implemented to usher a new era of nutrition-conscious rakyat and
towards a healthier Malaysia.
