MESSA GE B Y
THE MINISTER OF HEALTH M AL AYSI A
R apid demographic changes and nutrition transition have
unfortunately generated marked changes in unhealthy dietary habits
and inactive lifestyle of Malaysians. These changes are often
associated with an increased prevalence of diet-related
non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the population.
Despite various public health campaigns and activities over the past few
decades, the persistence of nutrient deficiencies and continued rise in
the prevalence of diet-related NCDs increases the healthcare costs and
influence the overall quality of life. The National Nutrition Policy of
Malaysia was therefore formulated to address these challenges. The
review of this policy is certainly imperative following the
nutrition-related commitments made by the country at national, regional
and global levels including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
and Global Nutrition Targets.
In pursuing the policy objectives, strong collaboration and synergy
between ministries, agencies, academias and professional organisations
need to be strengthened to operationalise the strategies outlined in this
policy. This multi-sectoral approach will ensure better implementation
and delivery of nutrition-specific interventions to effectively improve the
nutritional status of Malaysians.
I would like to congratulate the Nutrition Division, Ministry of Health
Malaysia and all parties who contributed to the review of this policy. I
hope that this policy will be the primary reference for other ministries
and agencies to incorporate nutrition strategies into their policies and
programmes. In doing so, the nutrition agenda in this country will be able
to be pursued to achieve our goal - health for all.
