THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF HEALTH MALAYSIA
R apid industrialisation and urbanisation over the past few decades has
had a huge impact on the environment and lifestyles of Malaysians.
Furthermore, globalisation has also significantly affected the dietary
practices which in turn influenced the prevalence of diet-related
non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
Despite various health education and promotion efforts have been
intensified by the Government, NCDs are still the leading cause of premature
death in Malaysia nowadays. In addition, the prevalence of malnutrition,
especially stunting and wasting among children under 5 years of age has
also increased over the past few years. The rise of NCD cases is worrying and
of a great challenge to the national health system. Thus, the review of the
existing National Nutrition Policy of Malaysia which has been in force since
2003 is a timely step and in tandem with the Government's efforts to build an
active and healthy nation.
Apart from highlighting the direction of nutrition development in Malaysia,
the implementation of this policy will hopefully strengthen the food and
nutrition security sector in the country, as well as further strengthen the
Government's efforts to combat the diet-related chronic diseases. This
policy will involve various stakeholders from all sectors to ensure the
planning and implementation of food and nutrition programmes are
comprehensive and effective for the sake of shared prosperity.
Finally, I would like to express my utmost appreciation to all parties involved
in sustaining the national nutrition agenda through the formulation of the
National Nutrition Policy of Malaysia. Let us all support and adopt this new
policy to create a healthy society and a prosperous country.
