THE CHAIRMAN OF THE NATIONAL COORDINATING
COMMITTEE ON FOOD AND NUTRITION
M alaysia has made impressive improvements in socio-economic
development since its independence in 1957. The world has also
recognised Malaysia for its best healthcare system that provides
top-notch healthcare services and sophisticated infrastructure. However,
despite an improved health sector, several key outcomes related to poor
nutrition still persist which have become moderate to serious public
health issues.
The Ministry of Health Malaysia has therefore developed this National
Nutrition Policy to tackle the problem of malnutrition. The development
and revision of the policy is spearheaded by the National Coordinating
Committee for Food and Nutrition (NCCFN), specifically the Technical
Working Group for Nutrition Policy. The policy is the mandate to ensure
optimal nutritional well-being of Malaysians by providing the framework
for nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive interventions and
programmes. It will also guide and strengthen multi-sectoral
collaboration to implement and ensure effective delivery of high-impact
nutrition programmes to the targeted population. Improved nutritional
well-being will therefore reduce the burden of diseases and eventually
increase the nation’s quality of life.
My sincere gratitude goes to the members of the Technical Working
Group who have invested immense effort in reviewing and finalising this
policy. Their varied contribution of expertise and knowledge to this policy
document is recognised and appreciated. It is hoped that this policy will
expedite the integration and mainstreaming of nutrition into the relevant
national development effort and policies.
