Expenditure Survey (HES) by the
Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM)
has found that more households are eating out.
The HES 2019 reported that Malaysian households
spent 28.5% of their monthly expenditure on food and
beverages including the purchase of food away from 50
home (DOSM, 2020). The money spent for home food
preparation decreased in contrast to food expenditure
outside the home. According to the Khazanah Research
Institute, the expenditure on purchasing food away from
home has increased from 12.0% in 1973 to 41.6% in 2016
(Jomo KS and Tan ZG, 2019). The findings of the Malaysian
Adults Nutrition Survey (MANS) 2014 showed that
about half of Malaysian adults in urban areas
purchased meals away from home (IPH, 2014).

The findings of MANS 2014 also reported that one in

two Malaysian adults had exceeded the
recommended intake for protein and fat. Malaysian
adults also did not meet the Malaysian Dietary
Guidelines (MDG) 2010 recommendation for two
servings of fruits per day (59.1%), three servings of
vegetables per day (81.7%) and one serving of milk
and dairy products of per day (73.6%) (NCCFN, 2010).
