The prevalence of obesity among adults has increased more than threefold within 10 years
from 1996 to 2006, from 4.4% in 1996 to 14.0% in 2006. However, the increased rate of obesity
prevalence has been mitigated, with only a slight increase to 15.1% in 2011. Nonetheless, the
NCDs remain as major public health problems whereby the prevalence of adults with
hypercholesterolaemia and diabetes mellitus has increased significantly. In 2015, the
prevalence of hypertension among adults aged 18 years and above was 30.3%,
hypercholesterolaemia 47.7%, diabetes 17.5%, overweight 30.0% and obesity 17.7% (IPH, 2015).
Meanwhile, as shown in Figure 3.1, the recent NHMS 2019 reported that the prevalence of
almost all of the parameters had increased except for hypertension and
hypercholesterolaemia (IPH, 2020).
