3.1 Nutritional Status
Malaysia currently faces the double burden of malnutrition, Average Children Height
with rising rates of obesity on the other hand, and the
persistent undernutrition problem especially among
children under five years of age. The problems of Stunting
undernutrition specifically stunting and wasting among
children under five years old, still persist and warrant
serious attention despite some reduction in the prevalence
of wasting. As reported in the National Health and Morbidity
Survey (NHMS), there was a slight increase in the prevalence STUNTING
of children under five years old who were underweight
(12.7% in 2006 to 13.7% in 2016 and to 14.1% in 2019). There was
also an increase from 17.5% in 2006 to 20.7% in 2016 and to 21.8%
21.8% in 2019 for stunted children. However, the prevalence Among Children
of wasting among children under five years old has Under 5 years
decreased from 13.2% in 2006 to 11.5% in 2016 and to 9.7% in
2019. There was a slight fluctuation in the prevalence of NHMS 2019
overweight among under five children from 5.8% in 2006 to
6.0% in 2016 and 5.2% in 2019.
Among Malaysian adolescents aged 10 to 17 years, the
findings of NHMS 2017 reported a reduction in the
prevalence of stunting from 10.1% in 2012 to 8.2% in that year.
The prevalence of thinness among adolescents also
decreased from 7.4% in 2012 to 6.6% in 2017. On the other
hand, the prevalence of both overweight and obesity among
adolescents is on the rise. The prevalence of overweight and
obesity among adolescents increased from 14.6% and 12.3%
in 2012 to 15.6% and 14.8% in 2017 respectively. OVERWEIGHT
