TR4A Restoration Update – submitted by Ed McMahon
I was asked to provide monthly information on my complete restoration on my 1966 TR4A.
The restoration started many years ago (>10) and I disassembled the car and purchased a parts car. I had cancer in 2010
and some follow up surgery in 2011 when things didn’t go as planned. To make a long story short nothing was accomplished
until I had the frame and body sandblasted and painted with primer last summer. A new floor pan and rocker panels were
fitted to the body and the interior was primed and painted. I brought a rolling frame with the engine, the body, and the rest
of the parts, doors etc. to Fort Myers at the end of 2019.
I began by disassembling the frame, cleaning it and painting it. I ran into two problems. The front supports for the body
are bent. Thinking it will be impossible to straighten and align them properly I will cut them off, straighten them, and
position them and reweld them when the body is placed. The second problem was that the lower breast plate had been
partially cut out. I just received a new one. I have refurbished and painted the front suspension part and purchased Koni
shocks.
One surprising finding was the differential did not look like a TR4A but the serial number was CTC63098. I wasn’t sure
what it was but after consulting with Dennis McKinley and Ed Major we concluded it was aTR4A differential with a TR5
rear mounting plate.
