Title: Bridging Heritage and Leadership: The Legacy of COL
Robert L. Le’iato’s Samoan Heritage and U.S. Military
Service:
It is told in Samoan legend that Le’iato was one of the first families to whom the original ie toga “le
fala of futa”, was passed on after he married the daughter of Maofa, the weaver of the first fine
mat. The title of Le’iato o Sua ma Vaifanua is considered one of the three highest ancient kingly
titles of Tutuila. These titles carry significant cultural and historical weight, reflecting the deep-
rooted traditions and societal structures of Samoan Heritage.
Ie toga are important as a store of value to gift exchanges during cultural ceremonies and events,
including matai chief title bestowals, weddings, and funerals. In this way, ie toga are passed from
family to family, sometimes for many years, and are greatly valued similarly to a currency of
exchange. The cultural significance of ie toga extends beyond their physical beauty, representing
the intricate social bonds and reciprocal relationships that are central to Samoan society. Their
exchange reinforces social ties and acknowledge respect and honor among families.
On Tuesday, 30 July 2024, a descendant of the Le’iato lineage, COL Robert L. Le’iato, became the
first of his Samoan heritage to lead as the Commandant of the US Army Financial Management and
Comptroller School. He was joined by his lovely wife, Rima (Shalhout), and children; Raniyah,
Ryan, Riley, and Razia.
