6. Plastic blast cleaning
It’s not recommended to apply any glass bead or walnut shell on any engine part. It’s recommended to apply
only the glass bead or equivalents to any engine part. Don’t use the sands to clean the engine parts as a FR
blasting medium. If the glass or walnut shell fails to be used as per the recommendations of medium
manufacturer, they may produce excessive dust and may embed in engine parts, thus it will lead to premature ST
faults of parts due to friction wears.
The plastic blast cleaning can be used to remove the deposits from various types of engine parts. The cleaning
BR
procedures are determined by use of plastic beads, operating pressure and cleaning time.
Warning
Don’t clean any aluminium piston skirt, piston pin hole, piston skirt or piston crown via blast cleaning BW
method. The tiny particles of such medium can embed in aluminium or other soft metal, and lead to
premature wears of cylinder liners, piston rings, piston pins and pin holes, while they can also cause the EL
damages of parts like air valves and turbo-charger shafts, etc. Please follow the keypoints for blast
cleaning listed in the following procedures.
Don’t make the foreign materials and plastic beads pollute the cleaning cabinet and cabinet-type
solvent cleaner. Apply the compressed air, hot pressurized water or steam to remove the foreign
materials and plastic beads, and then put the parts into cleaning cabinet or cleaner. The foreign
materials and plastic beads may pollute the cleaning cabinet and any other engine part cleaned in the
cabinet. The polluted parts may lead to their faults caused by friction wears. Shot blasting shall not
damage metal surface. If the metal surface is damaged, the engine may be damaged due to the increase
of part clearance or rough surface formed by relative movement between the parts.
In case of cleaning the piston, it’s not required to remove all the black spots from the piston. It’s required to
remove only the carbon deposits from edges and ring grooves. It’s best to blow the air across the part and not
to blow it straightly. If its machined mark is ground off while blasting, its pressure will be too high or its
blowing time at some point is too long. Shot blasting shall not damage metal surface. The walnut shell blasting
materials can be used to clean black metal (iron and steel) sometimes. If the pressure of air in blasting
machine is increased over the suggested value of medium manufacturer, the walnut shells will produce a lot of
dust during the blasting operation. In order to avoid the risk of engine pollution caused by medium embedding,
it’s recommended that the engine parts shall not be cleaned with walnut shell medium.
It’s recommended that the engine parts shall not be cleaned via glass blasting medium. The glass medium is
very easy to embed in the materials, especially soft materials, and it’s particularly obvious when the pressure
of applied air exceeds the suggested value of medium manufacturer. The glass is an abrasive material, so the
moving part embedded by it will wear all the parts contacting it. In case of applying a higher pressure, the
medium will be fractured and turn into dust with very small diameter, and it’s easy to float in the air. In case
of blowing the medium with compressed air (and cold water), especially after the medium is removed from
