his telephone number, when quizzed why, he said, if he could look
it up, it’s not worth keeping it in his head. That may be funny, but
it is true. I would ask you to download everything you do in your
business in an excel sheet or even a plain paper if that’s what you
know. I mean everything!
Now group everything into functional areas like Operations,
Marketing, Staff, Clients, Research, Technology, Accounting, etc
After this exercise, you will have a bit more clarity on what you
need to do in each area. There’ are tasks that are repeatable
because that’s the nature of business. Let me take networking as
an example, there are steps you take to find events, how you meet
people at the events, how you follow up after the event, etc. This
is a perfect example of repeatable tasks that would produce a
better result for you if you put together a procedure to do it better.
This is called ‘Standard Operating Procedures’ As a one-man
band, having a procedure for what you do will help you grow very
quickly. Eventually, when you employ others, you will already be
in a state of mind to organize that you are unlikely to struggle with
chaos. I started with the concept of bandwidth because you cannot
be creative if your head is stuffed with tasks you are planning to
do. The key is to have a list called ‘All Activities’. Everything that
comes to you must go into the list, every task whether big or small
must go under this list. This would help you analyze them into
functional parts; you can then prioritize and execute them
accordingly.
Having a clearer head gives you new ideas and creativity to get
your business and life to the next level. This exercise is not just for
business owners because everyone can benefit from organizing
and keeping junk out of their heads.
Personal Organisation – As with organisations, the instinct of most
people is to just act randomly and unconsciously because it is the
easier thing to do.
Let me give you some examples:
• Is it easier to sleep at random times?
• Is it easier to wake when you want to?
• Is it easier to work without structure or plan?
