Hunter’s Bend

This bend became world famous in

1978 when it appeared on the front
page of The Times newspaper of

London. It was discovered by Dr.
Edward Hunter and was thought to be

an entirely new knot, but as the news
passed around the world it turned out
that Phil Smith of California had described

it in his book Knots for Mountaineering
published in 1953. He called it the rigger’s

bend. All the correspondence generated by
the publicity led to the foundation of the
International Guild of Knot Tyers, now with

well over 1,000 members worldwide. So it could
be said that this is a bend for joining

              people together.
