Pocket Guide to Knots & Splices
1 Take the working end round a post or
spar and trap the standing part.
2 Take another full turn round the post. It
should lock in place between the first turn
and the standing part.
3 Take another turn round the post, this
time passing the other side of the
standing part. Tuck it under itself to make
a half hitch.
4 The finished rolling hitch note how the
pull of the standing part “nips” the first
two turns.
5 Finished rolling hitches for pulling in
different directions.
6 Finished rolling hitch, right angle pull.
Slipped rolling hitch
By tucking the working end as a bight, a
slipped version of the rolling hitch is made.
As with all slipped versions of knots, bends,
and hitches, care should be taken, but the
initial locking turns help to give a good degree
of stability to the slipped rolling hitch.
7 The finished knot.
