Knute Hitch
A lanyard is a small diameter line attached to a tool, or such like, to ensure
that, if it is dropped, it will not go far and can be pulled back to the hand. This
is most useful when working aloft, but if you are working at a bench, then the
trailing line can get in the way. If the tool has a small hole in it then this hitch,
another of Brion Toss’s ideas, is perfect for attaching the line as it gives a
permanent fixing that can be easily be released. The hole in the tool should only
be a little larger than the doubled line, and a figure-of-eight on the working end
ensures that it will not pull through by mistake.
Pocket Guide to Knots & Splices
1 Make a bight near the end of the line.
2 Slip the bight through the hole in the tool.
3 Put the short end through the loop
formed by the bight.
