Sailor’s Cross
The true lover’s knot
made in a single piece of
rope can, with a simple
couple of pulls, become a
cross. The same technique
is used to decorate pairs of
cord in China and Japan,
where the knot is a symbol of
good fortune and complete
virtue.
Pocket Guide to Knots & Splices
1 Start with a true lover’s knot tied
near the bight of the rope.
2 Put your fingers through the
overhand knots and grasp opposite
loops.
3 Pull the loops out to form the arms
of the cross; tighten and even all
points of the cross.
4 The finished sailor’s cross.
