It gives away the motives for building these parks at that time were mainly political such as
for the national celebration, the President’s birthday, conveying patriotic consciousness and
propagating government achievements.
The Emergence of the Democratic Movement Assembly
Most of the parks in the post-war period played a role of a gathering square for citizens. It
was a manifestation of democratic awareness in the country. At that time, there were mainly
squares with commemorative or gathering’s purposes. Many important gatherings during that
period were held in parks. It is also where we could hear the voice of the public. At the same
time, in addition to political activities such as the inauguration of the president, many large-
scale commercial activities or arts and cultural activities were also allowed to be held in the
park, such as trade shows and lantern festivals.
1. In 1978, President Yan planted trees in Jieshou Park to
commemorate the death of the founding father.
2. In 1976, the Zhongzheng Memorial Park was designed by
Yang Yingfeng’s designer in the meaning of Jiang Gongzi’s
“Jingshi”.
3. The Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Park has a bronze statue of
Chiang Kai-shek as a national memorial field.
